Abstract
This experiment was conducted to obtain basic informations on the growth and the essential oils of Elsholtzia splendens Nakai which is one of the native Korean aromatic plants and will be useful resources for medicinal, aromatic and ornamental uses. Seeds of E. splendens collected from Pyoungchang, Kangwon were sown on April 10th, 1997 and cultivated at the experimental plots of Yonam College of Agriculture in Chungnam. E. splendens was harvested in full bloom on Oct. 6. The plant height of harvested E. splendens was 110.45 §¯. The fresh weight which was composed of 19% leaves, 63% stems, and 18% spikes was 188 g. The contents of essential oil extracted from dried upper parts of whole plants, leaves, stems, and spikes by SDE method were 2.70%, 6.56%, 0.98%, and 8.01%, respectively, which were significantly higher than other aromatic plants. The major components of essential oil analysed by GC/MS were elsholtziaketone (52.48%) and naginataketone (30.37%). While the contents of elsholtziaketone and naginataketone of spikes were 57.65% and 33.09%, respectively, those of leaves were 82.26% and 4.48%, and those of stems were 70.96% and 2.65%, respectively. This experiments showed that the essential oil of E. splendens had sharp minty, herbaceous, or rue-like odor, and new cultivating method of E. splendens needed to be developed for the future ornamental and aromatic resourse.
